Job Description

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle is looking for a musician to lead worship Sundays at 10:00 am. The role of the part-time Musician is to facilitate worship by choosing, leading and playing music that enhances the congregation’s worship experience. The primary instrument is a baby grand piano. Experience with both Episcopal and Lutheran (ELCA) worship resources is helpful. Additional services may include holy days, funerals and weddings. This small congregation has no formal choir but includes some volunteer singers and musicians (viola, cello).

Responsibilities

1. Provide musical leadership and facilitate singing at one regular Sunday morning worship service per week. A piano and sound system are available.

2. Work with the clergy and other worship leadership to select music and liturgical options that engage the congregation and enhance the experience of worship.

3. Provide musical leadership for additional services such as Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday when available.

4. Recruit and work with additional musicians and vocalists as desired.

5. Subject to availability, provide music for weddings and funerals on a fee basis.

6. Report directly to the Vicar of the congregation.

Musician Requirements

• The Musician must attend Safe Church/Safe Community training within the first three months of employment and obtain a certificate of completion. If the Musician has previously attended the training, s/he must provide documentation demonstrating completion. The Musician will conduct her/himself within the policies and guidelines established in the Safe Church training.

• The Musician must undergo a criminal background check as part of the hiring process.

• The Musician should be able to lift 10-15 pounds and to access all the buildings and property.

Employer’s Responsibilities

1. Provide compensation commensurate with area standards and musician experience. 

2. Provide 2-4 Sundays of personal leave annually. Provision for sick leave is provided.

3. Participation in the Church Pension Group lay pension is provided according to guidelines.

4. Maintain the piano and sound system in good order.

5. Prepare and print worship bulletins.

6. Find and employ substitute musicians when the Musician is unavailable.

7. Provide an annual review.

8. Operate according to the Employee Benefits Manual approved by the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia.
